O&S performed consulting structural engineering services for the replacement of rooftop safety equipment around the perimeter of the various roofs of the Renaissance DC Downtown Hotel located in Washing DC. The hotel had previously failed certification of the equipment which hadn’t been used for some time.

O&S performed a condition assessment of the existing rooftop fall arrest system including swing stage davit bases and life safety tie of anchors. During the visit, O&S found that the existing davit bases were largely serviceable, however the tie-off anchors were deformed and deemed failed. Several destructive exploratory openings were performed to determine the as-built condition of the system. We observed that the tie-off anchors were not installed in accordance with the original design intent and required replacement.

O&S devised a repair project to replace all 118 anchors with new OHSA compliant surface mounted safety tie-offs anchored to the existing concrete slab. O&S engaged a fabrication and testing firm and oversaw the installation, testing, and certification of the new tie-off anchors.

O&S provided layout drawings, developed fabrication and installation details, developed project specifications, reviewed shop drawing, answered contractor RFI’s, and provided on-site technical supervision during the construction project.
